How Our Electricity Bill Calculators Work
Our calculators estimate electricity bills by applying the tariff components relevant to the selected consumer category.
Depending on the calculator and tariff category, the calculation may include:

Not every component applies to every consumer.
The options shown in a calculator depend on the electricity category being calculated.
Energy Charge Calculation
For slab-based tariffs, electricity consumption is divided into applicable consumption ranges.
For example, if a tariff has different rates for the first 150 units, the next 150 units, and consumption above 300 units, the calculator applies each rate only to the units that fall within that slab.
It does not normally apply the highest reached rate to all units unless the applicable tariff specifically requires that method.
Fixed Charges
Fixed charges are generally calculated using the sanctioned or contracted load of the electricity connection.
A simplified calculation may look like:
Fixed Charge = Sanctioned Load × Applicable Monthly Fixed Charge
The applicable rate depends on the consumer category and tariff schedule.
Fixed charges may still apply even when electricity consumption is very low or when rooftop solar reduces net energy consumption.
Electricity Duty
Where applicable, the calculator allows electricity duty to be included in the estimate.
A default percentage may be provided for convenience. In calculators where the field is editable, users should compare it with the electricity duty shown on their actual bill.
The exact duty base and applicable percentage may depend on the consumer category and applicable rules.
FPPAS and Variable Adjustments
Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge, commonly called FPPAS, may change from one billing period to another.
Because FPPAS can vary, our calculators may either:
- Provide an editable FPPAS percentage field, or
- Allow the applicable adjustment to be entered manually
When an FPPAS field is provided, the default may be set to 0% so users can enter the percentage applicable to their billing period.
Users should refer to their electricity bill or the latest official notification for the applicable adjustment.
Prepaid Meter Discount
Where an applicable tariff provides a discount for prepaid electricity consumers, the calculator may include a prepaid option.
The discount is applied only to the component covered by the relevant tariff provision.
Other charges may continue to apply normally.
Life Line Consumer Calculation
Life Line tariffs are subject to specific eligibility conditions.
These may include conditions such as:
- Maximum contracted load
- Maximum monthly consumption
- Applicable consumer category
If the entered values exceed the conditions supported by the Life Line tariff, the calculator may display an error or ask the user to select the regular domestic category.

Where a calculator supports TOD billing, consumption may be separated into periods such as:

Seasonal TOD periods may also vary.
Users should enter consumption according to the time blocks shown on their meter or electricity bill.
Rooftop Solar Net Metering
Some of our calculators include a rooftop solar net-metering option.
For an approved bidirectional net-metering connection, users may be able to enter:
- Grid import units
- Solar export units
- Previous banked solar credit
For estimation purposes, the calculator may use:
Estimated Billable Units = Grid Import Units − Solar Export Units − Available Banked Credit
Billable units are not allowed to fall below zero.
If export and banked credit exceed grid import, the remaining amount may be displayed as estimated carry-forward solar credit.
This is a simplified estimation method.
Actual solar billing can depend on the applicable UPERC regulations, DISCOM procedures, meter records, banking rules, settlement periods, and other regulatory conditions.
The official electricity bill should always be treated as the final record.
Solar Does Not Necessarily Remove All Charges
Rooftop solar may reduce the energy-charge portion of an electricity bill, but consumers may still be required to pay other applicable charges.
These may include:
- Fixed charges
- Electricity duty
- FPPAS
- Meter-related charges
- Previous balances
- Late-payment surcharge
- Other regulatory or billing adjustments
The exact treatment depends on the consumer’s connection and applicable rules.
Meter Reading Calculation
Where the calculator provides a meter-reading option, monthly consumption is generally estimated as:
Units Consumed = Current Meter Reading − Previous Meter Reading
The current reading should not be lower than the previous reading unless the meter has been replaced, reset, or another special billing situation applies.
Other Adjustments
Some calculators include an Other Adjustments field.
This allows users to manually include charges or credits that are not automatically calculated.
A positive amount can generally be used for additional charges.
A negative amount can generally be used for rebates or credits.
